Viscose Care Guide

Viscose is a biodegradable material that can be produced from a variety of plants such as soy, bamboo and wood pulp.

Viscose was discovered by British chemists, and was the first manufactured fibre to be produced in large quantities. It was initially marketed as a more affordable and accessible alternative to silk.

Viscose fibres and yarns are usually woven or knitted into smooth and soft fabric. This makes them ideal for hot, humid climates. At TOAST, we like viscose for its drapiness and movement, and for its ability to carry intricate prints and rich colour.

How to wash

Lyocell is a resilient fabric, but caring for it gently will help maintain its softness and longevity.

Most lyocell garments can be machine washed, but always check the care label first. Use a gentle cycle at 30 degrees with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can weaken the fibres.

For delicate lyocell items, handwash in cool water with a gentle detergent. Swish the garment lightly—do not wring or twist, as this can cause creases or distort the shape.

How to dry & store

Lyocell dries best when laid flat or hung on a padded hanger. Avoid tumble drying, as high heat can shrink or damage the fabric. Reshape while damp if necessary, and dry in the shade to preserve colors.

Iron on a low to medium setting while the fabric is still slightly damp, or use a steamer for best results. If ironing directly, turn the garment inside out to avoid shine marks.

Store your lyocell garments in a cool, dry place. Folding is preferable to hanging, as heavier pieces may stretch on hangers over time. Use breathable storage bags to protect from dust without trapping moisture.
