In our Autumn & Winter Collection we have two dresses and a jacket that have been embroidered by hand. The skilled craftsmen who have embroidered these pieces are based in Calcutta and come from long lines of embroiderers, with many inheriting their techniques from their fathers and grandfathers before them.
Skills vary from person to person. Some are renowned for their skill in zardozi (a Persian word meaning sewing with gold string) or aari (needlework formed by repeated fine chain stitches), while other others are sought after for their abilities in khakha (the tracing of the embroidery design from paper to fabric).
It is a profession that requires much concentration, a nimbleness of hand and patience unlike a machine made garment it takes time to achieve such detail.
The designs of our embroidered pieces are inspired by vintage garments from Japan and China.
